ãIâm a hairdresser by trade, though I gave it up long ago. May I brush your

hair Rain?ä

ãYes.ä I replied, although I didnât know why I would agree to such a

strange request. I only knew that I felt safe, warm, full and happy.

to live.ä

Allieâs words calmed me and made me feel good about baring my soul. Peter

nodded in agreement with his wife and I saw them exchange a meaningful

look. She rose and rummaged about in a bag by her feet, finally removing a

hairbrush and a spray bottle filled with what looked like water.

Approaching me slowly, she put her hand on my shoulder and spoke close to

my ear.

exposed my soul to them and felt only warm acceptance in return.

ãRain, youâre such a lovely young woman. I feel very close to you and

appreciate the way youâve opened up to us. Iâm certain Peter feels the same

way. All too often in this world, people tighten up and never allow those

deep inner feelings to emerge. I canât help thinking that if more folks

did, the world might become infected and this would be a much better place

and call me little one anyway because I was so tiny and delicate. He hoped

I wouldnât mind if he did so.

Laughing, I assured him I would not. Somehow, as we sat there, I began to

tell them about myself, although they never once asked. I told them my age,

and where I had come from and how I came to be all alone on a near deserted

beach in south Texas. I found myself spilling over about the epiphanies I

had experienced just before Allie found me. Sobbing with happiness, I

ãAnytime little one. Do you have a name, or do you prefer little one?ä

Allie asked kindly.

I grinned at once. ãSorry. My name is Rain.ä

Peter smiled and remarked what a nice name that was, but that he might slip

hunger. Some minutes later, the plate empty, I raised my head, expecting

the both of them to be staring at me like the graceless fool that I felt,

but I was pleased to see that Peter was reclining in a lounge chair,

staring up at the stars, and Allie was draped across his lap. They had

respectfully given me privacy as I gorged my empty belly on their humble,

but appreciated offering.

ãT-thank you,ä I whispered, ãThank you very much. I was hungry.ä

Styrofoam plate heaping with pungent sharp cheddar, small delicate wafers,

oysters and a handful of fruit. She handed it to me reverently, as if she

was afraid I would run away, that enigmatic smile still naturally in place

on her lips.

I felt my stomach quiver in anticipation as the smell of the cheese struck

me. Immediately I began to eat, forgetting about the two of them in my

wife before he spoke to me. ãWe have cheese and crackers and I believe we

still have a bit of smoked oysters left. Youâre welcome to anything we

have.ä

I tugged at my leather bound braids. ãYes, thank you. Iâm very hungry.ä I

whispered softly.

Allie moved immediately to the tent and emerged a few minutes later with a

ãMy name is Allie, and this is Peter. We travel a bit to see the world

while weâre still young enough to enjoy it. We came here in the seventies

right after weâd met, and now weâre back to revisit our youth.ä She smiled

as she looked at Peter, the light of deep love glittering in her eyes.

ãAre you hungry little one?ä Peter asked, returning that loving look to his

Even after so much time, I always thought I could feel that night over and

over. If I closed my eyes and held very still, the scent of sea air and

wood smoke would engage my senses and my mind would respond by igniting my

body.

The caress of air across my naked flesh, the gentle lull of surf lapping

“I had no idea,” Jeremy said, with a slightly stunned look on his face.

“Yeah, well, now you know,” said Shannon, a flush creeping across her

face as she picked up her books.

“I feel silly saying all this,” she said. “I should probably go. We can

study tomorrow or something.”

“You?”

“Yes,” she answered quietly. She pulled back from his chair and sat on

the edge of his bed. “I knew you had a girl back home, so I didn’t say

anything. But that’s why I asked if we could be study partners. If I

couldn’t have you any other way, I could at least have you as a friend.”

He wiped a few more tears and said, “If I’m in such demand, why don’t I

know any of these girls you say are interested?”

“Well,” Shannon said softly, looking him straight in the eye, “you do

know at least one of them.”

“Who?” he asked, and Shannon just looked at him, not saying anything.

Shannon knelt in front of Jeremy, put her hands on his arms, and said,

“Hey, don’t say that. There’s lots of girls who’d give their left arm

for a chance to be your girl.”

“Yeah, right,” he said bitterly. “That’s why nobody else would ever go

out with me back home and why nobody’s even said they were interested

here.”

Jeremy stood up, wiped his tears, and said with a sniffle, “She wouldn’t

even let me do anything more than kiss her. She said she wanted to wait

until we were married. And now she’s sleeping with some jock at her

college.”

He collapsed into a chair and said, “I thought Rosemary didn’t want to

have sex. Turns out, she just didn’t want me.”
